Chin implant possible risks

Standard

The goal of chin implantation, as in any cosmetic procedure, is improvement not perfection.

The final result may not be apparent for several weeks post operatively.

Strict adherence to the post-operative regimen is necessary in order to achieve the best possible result.

Although complications following a chin implant are infrequent, the following may occur:

-Swelling will occur. Most of this will subside over 7 days, but some may persist for several weeks.

-Both local and general anaesthesia involves risk. There is the possibility of complications, injury and even death from all forms of surgical anaesthesia or sedation

-Bruising or skin discolouration is possible. If this occurs it subsides over several days.

-Occasionally numbness or discomfort can occur. If this is persistent, a revision procedure may be necessary.

-A small scar will occur under the chin where the implant is inserted.

-Infection is uncommon, but should it occur, treatment with antibiotics will be necessary. It may also be necessary to remove the chin implant.

-Resorption of bone underlying the implant is possible.

-Occasionally an implant might shift in position requiring a revision procedure.

-Occasionally fibrosis tissues can form around the implants resulting in firmness.

-It is rare, but possible to have an allergic reaction to the implant. If this occurs, removal of the implant would be required.

– Occasionally weakness or loss of movement of the muscles of the lower lip can occur from nerve or muscle damage. Usually this is temporary. It is rare, but possible for it to be permanent.

Alternatives to proposed procedure:

  • not having the procedure
  • obtaining a second opinion from a different doctor and have this or another procedure performed by a different doctor
  • chin filler
