Many people wonder why women want to undergo liposuction. There are actually several very good reasons why a woman might want to consider liposuction.

Popular Reasons Why Women Undertake Liposuction

Some of the common reasons why women have liposuction include:

  • To treat metabolism problems. Some women have metabolism related conditions such as lipohypertrophy that make weight loss difficult and in some cases impossible. Lipohypertrophy is a lump under the skin that does not go away; it is sometimes caused by underlying conditions such as diabetes.¹ In some cases, liposuction is the only way to get rid of such a lump. Many people develop lipohypertrophy as a side effect of insulin and other therapies used to treat diabetes.
  • To counter metabolism changes that can make it hard to get rid of fat even with diet and exercise. Age, surgery, pregnancy, and some health problems can make it hard or even impossible for some women to get rid of fat no matter how hard they exercise or diet. Liposuction can remove such fat, particularly when it accumulates around the stomach, waists and breasts.
  • To contour or shape the body. A lot of women dislike the way they look. Some women undergo liposuction in order to change features such as breasts, chins, etc., that they feel are too large.

What Are Common Questions About Liposuction?


Hi! I am Dr M Szalay and I have performed over 500 liposuction procedures.I would like to answer some of the most common questions I am asked by patients.


Liposuction (or Liposculpture) is the removal of fat to reshape your body. After you are sedated, local anaesthetic is gently inserted to numb the areas as well as shrink the blood vessels to reduce bruising. Then the fat is removed using a fine hollow cannula. The incisions are very small and placed in inconspicuous areas.


In some areas such as the waist and inner knees, the results can be apparent in just a few days. Other areas such as the tummy and the thighs can take up to 12 weeks to get your final result so don’t worry if you are not seeing your result after a few weeks, it will come.


The most common areas treated are the tummy, waist (or “muffin top”), the thighs, back of arms and neck. These are all areas that just won’t shift with diet and exercise.


How I measure how much to remove is by constantly feeling your tissue during the procedure, which tells me how much fat has been removed and when is the right time to stop. Yes, I know you want me to “get it all doc” but you do need to leave a small layer behind for balanced contouring.
As a patient, I would expect you to be able to see a definite difference which we could confirm with photos at 3 months. Depending on the areas you had treated, you should also be able to achieve some other goal you were looking for, eg. go down a couple of dress sizes or no longer have your thighs rub together when you walk.

We give you a garment which you wear for 1 week all the time and then another 5 weeks at night. This is helpful in reducing the swelling and achieving a smoother contour. You can return to the gym after just 4 days and please be careful with your diet. If you stay at the same weight that we get you too, then the fat won’t return.
